MDMA Statement on House Passage of a Full Repeal of the Medical Device Tax

WASHINGTON, DC -- Mark Leahey, President and CEO of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), issued the following statement today regarding the passage of legislation in the House of Representatives that includes a full and permanent repeal of the medical device tax:

“A full and permanent repeal of the medical device tax is a tremendous victory for the tens of millions of patients who rely on the cures and therapies provided by our industry everyday, and the innovators who dedicate their lives to develop lifesaving and life-changing medical technologies.

“Since the tax was first proposed a decade ago, MDMA highlighted the adverse impact the device tax would have on innovation and patient care.  Thanks to the collective passion of a broad coalition of stakeholders, today this punitive policy is set to be repealed once and for all.

“The medical technology ecosystem has limitless potential to improve patient care and alleviate suffering, and it is critical that policy makers provide an environment that empowers innovators to address the increasing challenges facing health care.

“MDMA thanks all the Members of Congress, innovators, patient advocates and stakeholders who worked tirelessly for over 10 years to make this day possible.  We look forward to continue working with all of them on our shared commitment to improve patient outcomes, reduce the costs of care and help ensure that the United States remains the world leader in medical technology innovation.”
