MDMA Response to President Trump’s

State of the Union Address

Washington, D.C. – Mark Leahey, President and CEO of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), issued the following statement today in response to President Trump’s State of the Union Address:

"Medical technology innovators continue to lead the way so that patients and providers can benefit from the amazing cures and therapies that this vibrant ecosystem develops.  From reducing the cost of care to helping address the scourge of the opioid crisis, medical technology innovation is providing answers to some of our nation’s most pressing challenges.

"MDMA agrees with President Trump that we need the proper regulatory framework and incentives in place to fully unleash our nation’s creativity and growth.  This is why it is so important to advance policies that bridge the growing gap between regulatory decisions and securing adequate reimbursement.  The promise of innovative medical technologies will never be realized if payers do not provide access to patients and physicians.

"In addition, while the passage of an additional two-year suspension of the medical device tax is a recognition of how important it is to bolster America’s leadership position in this industry, Congress must permanently repeal this disastrous policy in order to fully realize the long-term investments in patient care and job creation that are critical to growth.

"It is important to remember that even with the right policies in place, innovation cannot thrive unless we maintain a strong patent system that protects intellectual property.

"MDMA looks forward to working with the President, Congress and all policy makers to help ensure that the 21st century is one where America’s medical technology innovators can lead the way to deliver on the promise of a better tomorrow."
