International Reimbursement Conference Attracts Diverse Range
of Speakers and Interests
On June 21, 2004, a diverse group of international
speakers and experts on Germany, Japan, China and the United
Kingdom painted a clear picture for MDMA members on how to
secure medical technology reimbursement in their particular
country during MDMA's International Conference in Washington,
D.C.
John Warrington
from Her Majesty's National Health Service explained where
and how to access health funds in the UK, including the recommendations
of a high-level government-industry task force helping to
make navigating the UK health system easier and more profitable.
Heidi Nadolski of the German doctor's association explained
what clinicians are looking for when deciding whether to support
reimbursement for a new technology both in the out-patient
and in-patient sectors in Germany.
Kazuhisa Takahashi of Japan's health ministry and Yoshio Mitsumori
a Japanese-based consultant, along with Japan expert Raelyn
Campbell, discussed ways to secure a good reimbursement price
and how to maintain this price in Japan as well as the forthcoming
new regulatory system there.
Richard Phillips of a large medical device company in the
UK explained how to get a new technology through their health
technology assessment body, NICE, and outlined the new HRG
bundled payment system in the UK.
Ed Rozynski, the conference's co-host, provided attendees
with a global overview of international medical technology
opportunities and helped to turn the suggestions of the speakers
into practical reimbursement advise.
Most importantly, the attendees, who hailed both from government
and industry, walked away with a keen sense of the reimbursement
opportunities overseas and satisfaction that their specific
questions were answered with unusual and refreshing specificity.
The next MDMA international program, which will focus on procurement
opportunities in China, will be held in Beijing on August
9th during the Chinese health ministry's annual medical device
exhibition. For more information on the China show or to purchase
