House Republicans Unveil Alternative Healthcare Policy Including Full Repeal of Device Tax

House Speaker Paul Ryan (WI) along with the House Chairs of healthcare committees of jurisdiction, convened today at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) to formally announce the majority's healthcare policy proposals, a part of Republicans' "A Better Way" agenda.

The Speaker noted that the plan sustains popular aspects of the Affordable Care Act, such as protections for pre-existing conditions, the ability to stay on parents' plan until age 26, and the prohibition on coverage rescissions. However, he also emphasized the proposals' inclusion of medical liability reform, greater risk pooling, and the ability to purchase insurance across state lines. Representative Steve Scalise (LA), House Majority Whip, said the proposal to enable people to shop for health insurance across state lines particularly empowers people to make their own beneficial health decisions.

Mark Leahey, President and CEO of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), commended the inclusion of a full repeal of the medical device tax:

"The two-year suspension of the medical device tax has allowed countless innovators to invest additional resources towards developing the cures and therapies of tomorrow, and we commend the report for fully repealing this onerous policy."
