MDMA Response to the State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, DC – Mark Leahey, President and CEO of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“MDMA agrees with the President that the United States’ spirit of discovery and innovation can transform our nation and our economy, but this can only be possible with the proper policies in place that will empower entrepreneurs.

“The overwhelming bipartisan support to suspend the medical device tax highlights the important role our dynamic industry plays in improving patient care and growing the economy.  Just as Congress recognized that this misguided policy thwarted innovation, we must continue working together to make the regulatory pathways more reasonable and predictable, shorten the lag between the regulatory and reimbursement processes and maintain a strong patent system.

“While the 21st century is still young, we have already seen tremendous advancements in medical technologies that have revolutionized patient care.  Med tech innovators are poised to develop new breakthroughs, and working with elected officials, policy makers and other stakeholders, MDMA and our members will make sure that this limitless potential becomes a reality.  Together, we can build on the proud history that made our nation’s medical device industry the envy of the world, and foster a new generation of cutting-edge cures and therapies.”
