CMS Activates Open Payments Program Public Database
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched its Open Payments database to the public, detailing payments to doctors by pharmaceutical and medical device companies as well as Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), as was mandated by the Affordable Care Act. The current database covers payments made between August and December of 2013 and will be updated again to cover all of 2014 in June 2015.
"While the underlying goal of CMS' Open Payments program is to increase transparency in the health care system, all stakeholders must remain vigilant to help ensure that this policy does not stifle innovation, or impede the unique ecosystem that has revolutionized medical technology," said Mark Leahey, President & CEO of MDMA upon release of the data. "MDMA will continue to closely monitor the implementation of the Open Payments program, and work with policy makers to make sure the system provides meaningful information to the public without overly burdening the innovators and physicians who are developing the therapies of tomorrow."
