MDMA Response to the State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, DC – Mark Leahey, President and CEO of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA) issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s State of the Union Address:
"The President is absolutely correct that investments in innovation will help the United States remain the global economic leader in the 21st century.  While there will be numerous debates on how we can improve our economy, there is widespread agreement that high tech job creation and reducing the cost of health care play a central role.  Medical technology innovators have a proud tradition of meeting these important goals, but we cannot take for granted that this will always be the case.
"In order to empower the next generation of jobs and innovations, we must ensure a sensible regulatory framework exists and remove unnecessary hurdles such as the medical device tax.  With an overwhelming bipartisan majority of Congress on record supporting repeal of the medical device tax, we must put an end to this onerous policy before more jobs are lost.
"MDMA and our members stand ready to work with the President, Congress and all policy makers to reach the full potential of medical innovations in the 21st century.  This industry shares a passion to help patients throughout the world by increasing their quality of care, and improving their standard of life.  This has been the medical technology industry’s legacy, and working together, we will continue to show the world why we are the global leader in innovation.”
